Guided Hyperventilation

1-channel film
full HD, 9:16
5:38 min

The video work “Guided Hyperventilation” follows a fictional meditation procedure surrounding an unusual breathwork technique that has allegedly become a popular trend on social media. Inspired by the specific look of guided breathing exercises to be found online, this immersive piece—entirely created in a vertical 9:16 aspect ratio to fit into the exact format of typical short-form video content—puts an interesting twist on this contemporary method of personal self-care: Starting out as a regular deep breathing practice, it slowly drifts into an anxiety-inducing exploration of paranoid discomfort, intrusive questioning and self-inflicted unease, completely absorbing the viewers into an endless cycle of existential dread, constant worrying and self-doubting behavior.
At the very end, the virtual narrator that has visually guided the viewers through this hypnotizing experience is finally revealed as nothing more than an external representation of their very own “inner voice”, presenting common thought processes within people who struggle with the infamous phenomenon of so-called “imposter syndrome” while vividly showcasing the self-destructive abilities underlying the influential nature of our own thinking habits.
