The 5 i’s of digital identity: How To Become An Idolized User (A Cautionary Manifesto) deals with the unrealistic standards that are currently being promoted on social media, with many of the users who actively share content within these platforms depending on misleading techniques such as curation, photo retouching and untruthful portrayals while simultaneously attempting to keep up a facade of authenticity. This phenomenon inevitably results in a vicious cycle of other users being confronted with these unlabeled deceptions, feeling the pressure to be—or at least present oneself to appear—equally flawless as them and unknowingly influencing others to do the same in the process.
As an ironic slideshow in the typical style of a step-by-step guide, parodying the common video format of low-effort YouTube tutorials, it comments on the absurdity both within idolizing online personas merely on the basis of their artificial, carefully fabricated identity portrayed on social media and the growing popularity of performing as a highly idealized version of oneself within the digital space.
