In the cyberspace of the 21st century, fundamentally impacted by aesthetic obsession and curated self-presentation on social media platforms, defining oneself as part of a specific aesthetic subculture has by now become a substantial part for the construction of one’s own identity, enabling feelings of social belonging and a sense of visual recognizability.
Displaying a list of equivalently bizarre and ridiculous “core” aesthetics—an especially common type of aesthetic niches which plays a significant role in the context of visual-based compartmentalization within the virtual space—TO THE CORE acts as a humoristic commentary on the absurdity of hyperspecific Internet aesthetics while underlining the shallowness of these categorizing labels when standing alone without their visual counterparts. In alphabetical order, each of the terms flickers across the screen in a split second, mirroring the increasingly short lifespan of microtrend aesthetics within the contemporary, fast-paced nature of social media.
