WATCH A TIK-TOK

1-channel film
full HD, 16:9 (original ver.) or 9:16 (TikTok ver.)
video loop (0:20 min)

“How long can you manage to watch this Tik-Tok?
How much more insightful is it than watching TikToks?
Are you getting bored yet, of always looking at the same, monotonous loop of predictable actions, of blankly staring at your LCD screen, just waiting for something new and unexpected to occur that brings you back to life?”

The conceptual video work “WATCH A TIK-TOK” inquisitively challenges its viewers by confronting them with the ultimate epitomy of visual boredom in the post-digital age: An animated loop of a pixelated hourglass presented on a (phone) screen, symbolizing the contemporary omnipresence of loading screens and buffering symbols like the infamous “spinning pinwheel of death”, systematically questions the lack of contentual depth within popular short-form video content that is typically being consumed via social media in the context of doom scrolling. While being objectively tiresome and frustrating to watch, these visuals however simultaneously awaken both the hypnotizing nature of repetitive computer graphics and the intangible sensation of constantly awaiting something new, unpredicted and substantively essential to happen.
